Show me tell me questions

The 'show me tell me' questions require you to explain to the driving test examiner where and how to check the tyres, brakes, fluid levels, lights, direction indicators, power steering and horn.

You will be asked two questions, normally one 'show me' and one 'tell me' question.

  1. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine-oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
  2. *Identify dipstick, pull out, wipe of with cloth, dip back in, pull back out then describe check of oil level against the minimum / maximum markers.

    It is important to check your oil regularly. Oil lubricates the engine and also helps with cooling, if you run low on oil your engine could stop working and cause terminal damage.

  3. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine-coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
  4. *Identify high / low-level markings on the header tank where fitted or radiator filler-cap, and describe how to top up to correct level.

    It is important to check your coolant regularly. Coolant cools the engine, if you run low on coolant your engine could overheat, stop working and cause terminal damage.

     

  5. Identify where the windscreen-washer reservoir is, and tell me how would check the windscreen-washer level.
  6. *Identify reservoir check there is some in there. (There is no min or max mark, as long as there is some in there its fine.)

    It is important to keep your windscreen washer fluid level topped up, so you are able to clean the windscreen on the move, as things can get on your windscreen while you drive at high speed and need to be able clear it straight away. It is also a legal requirement to make sure you don't run out.

     

  7. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is, and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
  8. *Identify reservoir, check level against high / low markings.

     

  9. Tell me how you would check that the brake-lights are working on this car.
  10. *Operate brake pedal; make use of reflections in windows, garage door, etc. or ask someone to help.

     

  11. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
  12. *Brakes should be tested prior to moving off by applying pressure to the brake pedal with the engine running
    *The brake pedal should not feel spongy or slack
    *The vehicle should not pull to one side when braking normally.

     

  13. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre-pressure for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
  14. *Manufacturer's guide.
    *Use a reliable pressure gauge.
    *Check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold.

     

  15. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
  16. *No cut's and or bulges; 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of the width of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

     

  17. Show me/explain how you would check that the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
  18. (If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly)
    *Turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning. It should feel light not heavy

     

  19. Show me how you would check that the headlights and tail-lights are working.
  20. *Operate switch- walk around vehicle to check they all work. (In my car you will need to turn the ignition on)

  21. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.
  22. *Apply the indicators- or hazard warning switch and walk around the car to check they all work.

     

  23. Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only), and explain what is the horn used for?
  24. *Press the horn to check it works, (but only off road). The horn is used to "warn someone of your presence".

     

  25. Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.
  26. *The handbrake should not be on the last "click" when it's working. To check this apply the foot brake to hold the car. Then release the handbrake, then re-apply it so it feels firmly on. Now try and lift the handbrake another click if you cannot then it is at the end of its working travel and requires adjustment or fixing.

     

  27. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash?
  28. *It should be adjusted so your eye line is in the middle of the head restraint, and as close to your head a possible.

     

  29. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers
  30. *Operate the washer jets, on the Corsa it's the right stalk, pull it towards you and hold for a few seconds, push away for rear window washer. All cars are similar to this.

     

  31. Show me how you would set the de mister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens?
  32. *Set the heat on, the fan on 4 and the air direction to window, and for the rear window press the rear de mister button on the dash.

     

  33. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them. (No need to exit vehicle)?
  34. *Turn the lights on, then press the fog light button which is located near the light switch, they should be used when visibility is less than 100 metres, a symbol will come up on your dash to indicate that they are on.

     

  35. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system (ABS)?
  36. *When you start the car the ABS light will come on, it should go straight back off again, if it does not there is a problem, or if it comes on while drivng there may also be a problem.

     

  37. Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car?
  38. *Turn the lights on, then on the Corsa press the left stalk away to operate on and off, there will also be a small blue warning light on the dash, this is very similar in most cars.
